Midway (movie)

Title: Midway

Directed by: Jack Smight

Year, production: 1976, USA

Cast: Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Charlton Heston, Glenn Ford, Toshiro Mifune, ...

Runtime: 132 min.

First big victory of US army over Japan in July 1942 after Pearl Harbor in World War II. The battle took place over the atoll Midway in the Pacific Ocean. Before that US bombed Tokyo and Japanese wanted to fight back. Japan wanted to destroy completely US fleet during that battle. They tired to mislead US by attack on Aleut but USA had radars and knew how Japanese move their forces. USA also broke their code so were able to listen to their commands. US attacked them first and sunk them 4 aircraft carriers and around 250 planes. USA lost one aircraft carrier and around 150 planes. Admiral Yamamoto had to end the operation and accept a defeat.

I saw this movie first time when I was a boy and I really liked it. Other thing is that we did not have that many US production in polish TV at that time but this movie is really good. Big roles of Henry Fonda as admiral Nimitz, Glenn Ford as a Spruance, Robert Mitchum as Halsey and Toshiro Mifune as Yamamoto. So maybe I will buy a dvd with that movie.

I saw the movie in Sensaround as a teenager and enjoyed it but was pissed off that no mention was made of the sinking of the Yorktown.
